“I was looking for another Christmas present for my very picky mother- you the type- one gift is never enough and she already purchases everything she wants. So buying for her is difficult to say the least, but I know she loves to drink tea. Great, high tea, lots of places have high tea in the Washington area. Problem- she does not like typically high tea food. What to do? Well, after hours of searching the internet I come accros the O Mansion. You have tea and not just high tea, but desert tea as well, JACKPOT! I have hit the mother load, a present not only of good food and drinks but also of my time. What more could a mother want. We went on Sunday January 9, 2011 and we had the best time. Exploring the Mansion and sampleing way to many rich deserts, but worth a life time of memories it created for both of us. We found 5 of the secret doors and cannot wait to come back to find some more. Thank you O Mansion PS. I am now planning my 40th birthday at the Mansion.”

When trouble manages to find me The Mansion can always remind me Of what is important, what is dear, What to push away, what to hold near. In all that clutter, a master plan; Those mirrors reflect the life of man. I enter worn down, exit renewed Restored by friends, family and food. As I leave, my angst withers and dies Again I see life through children's eyes.”

“I lived through this accident 4 years ago. The car was flipped end over end twice and rolled twice down a hill. I was belted into the passenger seat, the driver was unbuckled. He was thrown from the car before it flipped and landed unharmed beside the highway, I was in the only area of the car that was undamaged, in fact it looked as if an energy halo had kept that part solid. The tow-guy said it was a top ten wreck for him, and the worst injury I sustained was a broken big toe. I was 38 and had one son who was due to graduate High School. 2 months after this crash, I fell pregnant! The man who was driving was my husband and our marriage didn't survive to the end of the pregnancy, but for whatever higher purpose God has in mind for me, He has a greater one in store for my son. I can't afford to do much "extra" these days, but am passionate and curious and excited by life. I'd love to be able to share your work with my family. there are many days when I think that I actually DID die in that accident, and that all of THIS life that I am percieving is actually a dream. In that vein, I take nothing for granted, and revel in the gift that is "being". I have alot of arty things, (went to art school as a matter of fact) but Im going to send you a few things, 1 is an essay I wrote after last years snowstorm, the other is a photo of the accident, and third is a picture of me and that baby. I'd love to get more involved. Deborah (oh and the treasure hunt on line is making me cookoo!) (Click to Enlarge Pictures)”

“Our first experience at the Mansion was interesting, unique, and enjoyable, so we were excited to bring a few friends to your New Year's Eve party. However, the experience fell short of the charm that the Mansion can offer. The evening was not well choreographed, the music was unsuitable, and the champagne choice could have been a lot better. We are hoping these comments will improve a place we would like to revisit.”

“The Mansion on O Street was the first weekend away with my boyfriend, it was the first trip to our nation's capital, and it was our first Christmas together. Like the many monuments it is bordered by, the Mansion on O Street commemorates an event that has become important to me. I first learned of the Mansion in August 2009 during a weekend visit to DC. We were having a great weekend of touring and enjoying our surroundings, yet he kept reminding me that the best was yet to come. On our last morning in DC we walked to the Mansion in temperatures that must have reached 100 degrees. The Mansion served as a refreshing retreat as we were greeted by friendly faces and served a delicious brunch. After brunch we explored and ventured through secret doors and imaginative spaces. We picked our favorite rooms and learned of the Mansion's secrets. During our exploration of the Mansion my boyfriend came across a George Washington doll. As a George Washington University graduate, he not only has a special place in his heart for DC, but also for George Washington himself. He went back and forth about purchasing it, but ultimately we both left with different items. When we returned home I emailed the museum and had the doll shipped to Rhode Island. As hard as it was, I kept Mr. Washington a secret. On Christmas we exchanged gifts, and he was both surprised and delighted to see our first President in the gift box. It could not have been a better way to commemorate our first Christmas. The Mansion on O Street truly holds a special place in my heart. The magic and wonder of the Mansion itself are what made it the centerpiece of our trip to Washington. But the helpfulness, attentiveness, and caring of the staff are what helped to make it a centerpiece of our relationship. While I don't know when we'll have the opportunity to return to the O Mansion, I am confident that all of our return trips will be just as magical as our first. (click to enlarge)”

“With most of my family still on a time zone 5 hours east of DC, we've already moved out of the Gatehouse and are back to our house in Bethesda, ready to tackle the mundane tasks of unpacking suitcases and getting settled in here. We wanted to share our heartfelt thanks for letting us spend Christmas at the Mansion. While jet lag and mildly sick children prevented us from spending more time at the main house, the Gatehouse was an ideal place for everyone to decompress after the stresses of a transatlantic move, and a great staging area for our Christmas events, which included a nice Christmas Eve dinner with relatives in the District, and the great lunch at the Mansion yesterday, which allowed us to reacquaint ourselves with even more relatives in the area. I am sure that you will be seeing more of us, and quite likely some of our guests from yesterday as well; they, like us, have succumbed to the magic of the Mansion. Many thanks again, and I hope that you might be able to find some moments of quiet in what appears to be an extraordinarily hectic season for you!”

I would have to say that staying at the Mansion is one of their favorite childhood memories. Since then, we have moved to Northern Virginia and we continue to visit the Mansion for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Even though my children are now 16 and 24, I believe they enjoy it as much as they did when they were younger. This Christmas, my older son is bringing his girlfriend. This is her first visit to the Mansion. In our family visiting the Mansion at the holidays is now a family tradition. A tradition I hope my children will share with their own children one day.”

“My Favorite Christmas Gift Children grow up and leave the nest. They marry and start families of their own. After that, time accelerates for their parents. December pops up faster each year. This December finds me grappling with some especially challenging Christmas shopping. One particularly dear person on my list has me stymied. As I reflect on special Christmas gifts that I have received, one stands out above all the rest. Two years ago I was beginning to feel a little old for the first time. Both our daughters were grown and married. We had one grandson and another on the way. Life was good, but different now. In early December the girls announced that for our Christmas gift they wanted to take us to brunch at the O Street Mansion. My husband and I had never been there. A date and time were agreed on and the four of us set out together alone for the first time in years. We are blessed with terrific sons-in-law and awesome grandsons. We have great times together, but they are often busy making their own individual family memories. The Mansion at Christmas is a glorious place and we were soon caught up in the excitement of good cheer, excellent food and beautiful surroundings. The sisters talked and giggled more than they ate, just like they did as children. We reminisced and laughed at old family stories. Then we explored the mansion and admired the art and decorations. For a couple of hours that afternoon I was transported back in time to the days when the four of us went on adventures together. Our little girls were sharing an outing with their parents and showing them secret passages and fun. For a shining afternoon I was just the mother of those little girls again. It was magical. The most special gifts are inspired. They come from the heart. As I struggle to think of a special gift for my sister, I remember the special afternoon my daughters gave me and I'm getting an idea.”

“Am a journalism major with an art history minor making ends meet like many another in a world of science. For many, many, moons, I have been a part of the universe of technology but I was recently a guest at a business event held at The Mansion. I was like a kid in the candy store with wide eyes and bright smiles. The world of science had intersected briefly with a world of art and style.... I cannot say for sure which of the many pieces of artwork, rock memorabilia or secret doors got my adrenaline flying the highest. I can say it was a truly memorable event. Imagine a charcoal grey, business-suited, 340 lb guy, hiking up and down the stairs and finding at least 10 of the secret doors in an hour-and-a-half. He breathlessly tells his VP about what he just found and marches off to his next adventure. The first act of this story ends when he manages to lock himself out on the balcony in December on one of the upper floors but the story will continue someday in a follow-up with friends and family. That is what I tell those same friends and family about the evening at The Mansion.”

“On any day you can make an impromptu detour to the O mansion and visit a bunch of old friends you haven't met yet. Most of my visits have been unplanned outings -- I went out to buy stamps and ended up at the mansion on O street. No matter how I got there, one tradition I indulge in each time I visit is to flip to a random page of a random book off a random shelf in a random room. Its the same trick they teach when you as a child -- letting a verse in the bible or quote instinctively find you. On a recent visit my page flip landed on the poem "Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Blackbird" by Wallace Stevens. This wasn't my first time reading this poem-I'd come across it before through friends, school and even in song. However, at that moment it completely embodied the spirit of the place I was standing. Every verse describing a different way to look at a bird in much the same way 100 rooms, 32 secret doors each unlock different perspectives from which to look at ourselves a! nd each other. The O mansion reminds me that there are so many ways of looking at everything and as a result there will always be more in life to explore, discover and dream. This magical trajectory the O mansion's philosophy very much inspires has lead me here. Since the first time I visited the mansion, I've had a strong desire to share this unique place with my whole family. Before learning about this contest I made a short documentary of a friend taking their first journey through the mansion. I showed the film to my family and it was suggested that I send a copy to a staff member. While searching the website for contact information to do so I serendipitously stumbled upon this contest, which potentially may allow me to actually bring my entire family to the mansion. Either way I am happy to have a conduit for sharing my thoughts and feelings about the O mansion with the people that make it special. O Journey from Jennifer Stratton on Vimeo. Je t'embrasse, Jennifer”

“The O Mansion is a place where I seek rebirth. It is a place for peace and solace. My twin sister and I had our fortieth birthday celebration in November 2006. We were reborn. The ambiance was so perfect. (with a very warm, friendly, subdued atmosphere) Like a mother's hug to make a person feel as if to want curl up upon entry. Truly unforgettable. P.S. I am so glad that my mom was able to attend our birthday celebration, after she was released from Georgetown University Hospital from a setback with kidney dialysis. My mom truly loved The O Mansion. My mom passed a year later (January 16, 2008) from Kidney disease. The attached picture is my mom, Rosa Drummond at the O Mansion during our 40th Birthday celebration. Thanks for your superior hospitality. (click to enlarge photo)”

“For H & Mansion On O Street -- Thank you for creating such a space. This token of appreciation isn't much, but it wouldn't have existed without you. Scott Buckley Replenish (use our gerald johnson art that has replenish on it, as he wrote it in our notebook)... Replenish If you are weary, worn weak-hearted, crave relief, you will be lost. For if you find the thing you crave then you'll devour it and crave it once again. Nought lasts, not you, your craving nor the beauties that you crave. All pass. Forget your self. You're not our thoughts, your dreams, your wants, your needs -- though they spin out of you. You're not who you once were nor who you will become. Each infitenesmal moment you are born and then you die. Look closely at your f ace. Each feature becomes tissues and then cells composed of proteins and then atoms and then gluons and then waves and then mere ripples on the surface of Existence. You are Existence both incarnate and before. You are the beauty of the cosmos that for some unfathomed reason twitches in and out of being all of time. The glory of Existence ripples through you every instant just the same as all your heroes and your longings and your cravings but the thing is, you can see! You can see it all flow through you You can feel it in your being as it saturates your tissues and it permeates our mind. And when you turn to daily life you will discover you're replenished and your cravings have subsided and are gone. And no matter wht befalls you you will find the worn, weak-hearted ones all turn to you, like flowers to the sun. For you replenish them, For Everything is One.”

“I'm not sure that words can really express what the Mansion means to me. That's something that goes beyond thoughts or feelings, for which there may be words. But I don't think it's just a matter of the inadequacy of words. If I were tech-savvy enough to own and know how to use a digital camera or video recorder, I don't think the sights and sounds that could be electronically recorded and shared would prove any more adequate... Still, when I saw what seemed like a challenge of self-discovery - a seemingly simple question begging to be answered: What does the Mansion mean to you? - I couldn't resist. I'd heard about the Mansion before, but these references fell in the category of things that people tell you about, which make you think "Oh, that's interesting...", but you really don't understanding what it was they were really describing until you experience it for yourself (for example, like Cirque du Soleil). I'd heard The Mansion was an alternative hotel, or a great place to go for a Sunday brunch, so I stored this information in the back of my head for future reference... I didn't 'discover' what The Mansion really is (to the extent I've scratched that surface) until I was looking for a place for my organization to have an office retreat. I wanted to find some place to match the passion we feel towards our mission (to protect human rights and the environment), and the hotel conference rooms I was finding just weren't going to cut it. I found a few places that might have been OK (said with a resigned sigh) ... but somehow or other The Mansion reached out and found me, without me even really realizing I was looking for it, just when I really needed it. I don't remember how that happened. All I remember was that I had a rapidly growing understanding that it was going to be The Place I was looking for as soon as I started to make contact (via the website - What a treat!! - and then with the people who facilitate the Mansion's magic). When I showed up to check out the place in person it was not at a normal hour, and so I entered through the d! ownstairs door. It felt like I was entering through some special portal. I was instantly hooked. Magic indeed! I almost felt guilty asking for a full tour, as I knew from those very first few seconds I'd found what I was looking for, but I suddenly was greedy for more. I wanted to see it all. I was grinning from ear to ear as I entered each room, saw each angel, walked down each narrow passage way leading on to the next discovery, could almost hear the music coming out of each guitar... I was enchanted! I couldn't wait until my colleagues would see it as well. It was a space that was even more outside than outside the box. When it came time for the retreat it was like we were transported to a different planet. We spent a couple days exploring The Mansion while we explored our own mission, and prepared our strategic plan, in a space where the creative energy was almost bristling. The space, the books, the art, the food. It all enriched our mind, bodies, and souls. There could not have been a more perfect place for us! Since then I've come back - always bringing someone else along, knowing that they too will be charmed, and will marvel at this total-being experience of stepping from what seems like an ordinary street in Washington DC into a magical kingdom (not of the mickey mouse variety). To enter in to The Mansion is to enter in to a state of mind that makes you feel blessed, and as special as the place itself is. Thank you for creating this space and opening it up to the rest of us!”

The idea of being in a room filled with memorabilia from Jackie O or John Lennon, and eat those delish pastries and dinners- oh, my head is swimming. I am drawn into the history of the building and how the owners acquired and changed the place. It sends my mind into a Disneyland for adults mode. “"They need you in DC day after tomorrow." Oh, shit, I thought. Just what I need. Another pop-up to Potomac Yard! (Yard, like that's some kind of outdoor playground for feds). "OK, let's get the paper going, and see what hellatious ransom AA wants to carry my bones up there with all the Arkansas school teachers, who just can't take another fall with pagers, now cell phones, now iPhones." I made the necessary arrangements, including breaking the news to our 8 year old Catahoula, who, since we rescued him from the 'perfect family' in Tucson, has made it his mantra to chortle my name and flap his ears every hour and a half, day or night. Wayman Wynn (he was named after Ellie's long ago family retainer, who had served with General Pershing in War I) is a handsome and too smart hog dog, who loves to 'bug his daddy.' 'His daddy' being me. Twelve hours later I was slogging to the gate at DFW Terminal C, carrying on too much equipment, and being too cheap to make the agency pay for a damn bag. Air travel just is not what it used to be. Let me explain. I'm a 'handy man' for a federal 'utility' dot gov and while it sounds mysterious and adventurous, it really gets to be a bore sometimes. Especially since Illich and crew said they'd be watching for me next time. As I land at National on the river (just can't get warmed up to call it by that other name) I'm contemplating how to get to my safe house in NW without the knuckle draggers spotting me and making this trip very inconvenient. So I decide to take the Metro and see what the September bouquet is like in the tunnels this year. All great, cause no meatheads want to sweat enough to find me in this crowd. I changed from Yellow to Red and get off at DuPont with my cover as an over the hill 2 year college prof glowing from the workout holding perfectly. I see the kids and old timers giving me that look of 'aren't you too old to be doing this, pop? - take a cab, the government can afford it.' A couple of times I thought the goons spotted me, but it was just some G. Beck wanna be (as opposed to some J. Beck wanna be, which would be a much higher calling). I finally got to the 'long escalator out of the bowels of the Earth' that took me out of South Exit, Dupont Circle, and as I looked around to make sure the morons had not grown brains, I discovered that my lungs did work, and the sun did shine. I doubled back off N and Connecticut a little, to be sure that 'my befuddled old guy' persona was still intact, and finally made it to the "RED DOOR". Now for those of you who know, or who will know, the RED DOOR is code for reaching the safe house. It is a haven for those of us who may watch Rubicon on 3D LED TV but under no circumstance, will listen to GaGa on an iPod. It takes more than technology to make it to the "O" Mansion. It takes an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and a few "Mabelline" riffs on a sitar. If you believe that real vampires live in Dark Shadows, and werewolves sing at Trader Vics with perfect hair, then you may be ready for the Mansion on O Street, in DC. You'll never stay at the Marmet in Crystal City again.”
Noel Izon on Sep 8, 2010 said:
“As a musician, I have always felt a natural affinity for the O. Although I have been known to drool over the Fenders and Gibsons (never on them) residing in some of the rooms, there is something else which draws me to the Mansion. I have never really thought about it until now. In a word, it is exhuberance. The owners have taken to task of creating an environment untrammeled by rules. Their only motto is that it must be fun. To find such a haven in the heart of DC is such a special treat, like a mini-vacation into your inner child. In these tough economic times, if one must settle for a "staycation" then let it be at the O. Not only will you get great food. You will nourish your psyche.”

“Have you ever felt as if there is no beauty left in the world. When circumstances and life itself make the reality of innocence lost all to real. This is a personal story of low self esteem, a dying soul and a broken spirit...and a cup of tea. All my dreams of youth had been shattered and I could never imagine the story that life had written for me. I felt alone and those around me didn't know the girl that became the woman who life itself had beaten with very little effort. I decided that I wanted to find someone who knew me "when" and could remember when we laughed for no reason, and when the most we ever worried about was getting our term papers in on time or a zit. So, I searched the internet for an old college friend that through distance, pride, life we had lost contact. Thank God for modern technology I did a people search and after 25 years I believed I found the person I was looking for, and was anxious to see if it was the same person. First, let me tell you about Monique "Mighty Mo" Dula, she is not a tall woman but she stands as a giant amongst most. She is the kind of friend that will walk thru fire for a friend but will also set your rear end on fire if she thinks you are wrong but does it with love and respect. She takes no nonsense or prisoners and I love her! She is my best friend, my partner in chocolate, and my sister. She has a smile that lights the world and wisdom beyond her years. When I dialed her number and heard that voice it brought back all kinds of memories and how happy was I, a friend who knew me when life was good. I left a message and waited - she called me almost immediately and we squealed as young silly girls. We tried to fit 25 years into 5 minutes between tears and laughter. She lives in Maryland and works in DC she was adamant for me to visit, but because of pride of not having a lot of money and embarrassment I kept putting the visit off, until she refused to take no for an answer. So, she decided to give me a Queens Weekend. I arrived at Union Station and there she was my beautiful long lost friend, almost like putting on that favorite outfit and you know everything is going to be alright. We hugged and jumped up and down how awesome. She planned the weekend saying she had a surprise and was saving the best for last. We did some pretty great stuff but then the incredible happened, I was transported to such opulence, distinction, things that seemed out of a fairy tale and all that was at The Mansion on O!! All during the weekend it was a rebuilding of spirit, soul, and fabulosity. But, that visit to the Mansion made me feel like Alice falling through the rabbit hole. I lost myself in the wonder of what the mind can conceive, the mysteries of the doors represented life to me - we never know whats behind them but if we don't open them we may be missing out on the best surprises. I felt like a queen as I walked through every area I could, and the food was something out of a feast set for royalty..Henry the 8th would have been jealous. Then as I walked around and was told every single thing was for sale that was almost surreal you can buy a piece of the fantasy. The experience was spirit and mind altering as I started to feel the wonderment of life, the creation and imagination that can take an idea to such levels. The Mansion was what I wanted to become queen like, mysterious, stately, opulent and yet inviting and approachable. I spent a few hours there replenishing my soul and making up stories of past guests and events. We went into one of the rooms and just sat in silence as if the house spoke of all its past visitors and how it too was a living, breathing thing and had a spirit and soul that has lasted through time. My friend bought me a little compact mirror, and told me every time I felt low, to look into it and see the queen that the Mansion brought out of me. Its been a few years since that first visit I have been back several times and life with God's grace has gotten so much better and I am so grateful for all I have. I have had brunch, tea and even Thanksgiving dinner at the Mansion. I always feel that I get a little fairy dust sprinkled on me when I'm there, and so have my guests because our hearts get light, laughter comes easy and the feeling stays past after you are gone. I have seen the most stoic individuals become children wondering where the doors are, and looking at the dessert buffet as if out of an Oliver Twist novel. So when I think of the Mansion I can think of all standard descriptions of its beauty and greatness but I think of the Mansion as the place where my heart started to heal, where my oldest and dearest friend shared old stories with me and reminded me of my worth, and where for the first time in a long time I dared to dream over a cup of tea!! Your staff was gracious, and we were continually amazed by the Mansion. What a great concept and an elegant delivery - Grace was particularly enamored with the variety of artwork. I've attached an image of Grace's award winning pastel, which now hangs in a gallery between the Capitol & the Cannon Office Building. (click to enlarge)”

Whether you're downing champagne at 2pm at Sunday brunch, or sneaking upstairs to ogle the Log Cabin room, or running into mirrored walls in an effort to relieve yourself, or hamming it up with the chefs in the basement, or trying on antique jewelry and extravagant headwear, or channeling rock legends by delicately running your fingers down the frets of a Gibson, or showing off to friends by plucking open secret doors, or escaping reality for just a few hours, or saying hello to everyone you meet, anything goes at the Mansion. Its obscure vagueness, its sheer inscrutability, and moreover, its tolerance, keeps one coming back and leaving yet again with a completely justified and memorable experience.”

“This internship gives me a lot something which I will never get at home. I think I did get some understanding about customer after one month. Last week I went to Georgetown for shopping. I experienced a nice customer reward. People are the same. We all have feelings. If you treat someone well, they will make a lot things easier for you. 1. Competitions are everywhere. In certain scenario, people compete unconsciously. Otherwise, it is really easy to be out of business, or just hold back a lot. 2. Reality is tough. It is really lucky to have nice parents. Money and respect are not free. The other day I watched Ted moved these plates with us together in a SUIT. I think it is very impressive. I should be that kind of people who can dress well in a business meeting and sweat like a gorilla picking up the fruit on the tree. 3. I am not sure what I am going to do back home. But I will remember not to complain when other people complain about something. Because negative attitude pass through a person faster than positive attitude. And eventually make myself feel stupid and make my situation ugly. 4. USA is great. A lot of products are designed very good and specific to use. I love to go to the Home Depot. 5. I think I am going to make my children do something to earn for his or her pocket money in the future.”

“The Mansion is the ultimate hideaway for people who want to experience something unique, fabulous, sophisticated. A hideaway for people who want to experience all these things without any distractions from outside(rs) - it's a safe haven for regular folks who would like to believe that they found "THE SECRET SPOT", politicians, or simply famous folks who would like to be "themselves" without being judged and/or scrutinized. At the Mansion - and ONLY at the Mansion ALL THAT and then some is possible. The Mansion and it's fabulous staff are discreet and spoil their guests with gourmet food (Brunch is a MUST DO!!!) that makes ones taste buds re-discover the true meaning of "Gourmet". A romance between new, nostalgia, old (not old: let's call it "antique"!) will leave one gasping for the right words..... but it's simple: "Oh! The Mansion" - folks, run tell dat!”

“Once upon a time there was a young, fit, attractive woman who was employed in DC and went to fabulous parties and events at beautiful venues such as yours. Then the young, fit, attractive mother married an ugly ogre and was forced to quit her job, stay home and birth baby after baby until she was no longer young, fit, or attractive. One day the woman awoke and decided to change her life. She escaped from the Ogre and finally found her Prince. She soon married her Prince and leads a quiet, humble life in a small town. For the most part, the woman is very happy. However, there is a part of that young, fit, attractive woman who would still love to visit fantastical places such as the Mansion. So, I ask you. Wouldn't you love to make a middle-aged woman's dream come true by allowing her to win this wonderful prize? Think of the joy you would bring to her life. Humbly submitted by the Mom of many in small-town USA.”

“Meeting the O. It was simple, really, to fall in love with the O Mansion. I suspect it would be simple to fall in love *at* the O Mansion too, but I was already there with the man I love. Steve, my fianc?, had been invited to a dinner by the World Bank Institute leadership program - and refused to go unless he could bring me as well. I was excited to meet some of his colleagues, whom I'd heard so much about, but I wasn't entirely anticipating a great time at a "work" dinner. Was I wrong! Mingling before dinner was fun, and it was great to be introduced to people whose names I knew well but whose faces I hadn't yet seen. Clearly, some didn't quite understand what it meant when he introduced me as his partner - since I'm from Yale and we were collaborating on a project together only cemented in their minds that our partnership was purely work-related. Still, the atmosphere was light, and more - invigorating. We took up the invitation to explore the mansion. We wandered through it with others, all of us exclaiming and laughing at each new surprise - the 1001 items for sale, the whole notion that anything was saleable, a reminder of both impermanance and continuity; the hidden doors; Log Cabin; the John Lennon? By the time we descended back down the stairs to dinner, we felt like we'd been transported into an entirely new world. Time at the O allowed us to see things in a whole new light - all of us, I suspect. As we were ready to leave, Steve introduced me to one of his managers as his partner, while another manager (whom we'd met earlier) stood nearby. "Partner?" he asked - and suddenly burst out in a grin. The notion that life was rigidly bounded by work and projects -- that things fit neatly into boxes of "colleague", "partner," and "lover" -- had broken down. That's the O's magic. As we left, I told Steve that I wanted to be married at the O - to give our friends and families the chance to experience and enjoy the imaginative and reinvigorating time we'd spent -- even at a "work" dinner. And, in three weeks, we will be.”

“In these internship days, the most important thing what I learn is that I have to try to solve the problems by myself. Before the internship in Mansion, I admit that I have a degree of dependency on both life and work. I was accustomed to get help from other people but not by myself. However, during the internship here, the most biggest change of myself is that I learn to solve the problems by myself and become more and more confident. I really feel that I am growing up. As I see it, I have learned how to give mature consideration to all aspects of a question and how to make things perfect by my own ideas. Moreover, I realize that communication and carefulness are two of the most critical elements in hospitality industry by the daily work. I need to hold a good relationship with my managers and fellows to take a better teamwork to provide better service for the guests.. Also, the good communication with guests can help me to deliver my service directly, correctly and quickly. The more satisfaction guests get, the more happniess I get. In other hand, carefulness is one of the most important decisive factor of quality of service. So I always remind myself that to try to do the services slowly and carefully in the work. As an intership management trainee of Mansion, I need more observatioin and creativity. According to my observation of the operation of hotel rooms and F&B, I have to provide some fresh and actual perceptions. Everday we need to write the daily report, which includes pending, actioned, perceptions and so on. According to write the report everday, I have got a custom that to review what I did today, think about what else should I do next day and try to put forward the questions or ideas about the daily work daringly. It's really a good process of studying and improving. Although I met many kinds of difficulties in the work, I never give up and believe that these challenges will teach me something special. I try my best to adjust my states of mind to adapt to the jobs better. And it's really thankful that I really got some helps and encourages from my managers and fellows. In conclusion, the internship experience is impressive for me. It improves my personal ability of communication, observation and operation. It's meaningful. And I believe that these outcomes will bring me a brighter career future.”

“Hi! This past Christmas I decided to do something a little different. On Christmas Eve, without telling them where we were going, I brought my two daughters ("Oh Dad, not another secret trip! Where are we GOING?"), my out of work brother, and my 82 year old mother, to the Mansion. I gave them each $30 and said "Find a treasure and buy it!". My mother was in stroke recovery, but in her day she was a musician, a flea market specialist and Collector of Things, and even a Docent at Hillwood, the Margery Merriweather Post mansion here in DC. She absolutely LOVED the O Mansion. The girls covered every room they could find and had a blast! Mom moved slowly between floors, but was in awe by Simply Every Thing! In between helping her around, my brother found The Perfect Hat. I had the best feeling of giving I have ever experienced and we all decided this would be a new family tradition. I was also on the lookout for one of the Afternoon Teas at the mansion hoping to get ! Mom to attend one of them. She was looking forward to one. Mom was hit this June with acute diabetic pancreatitis. The impact of this disease spread throughout her body, and although she fought for three and a half weeks in the ICU and suffered the entire time, we lost Mom on July 5th. Still in shock, and still going through her things, I just realized I have tears in my eyes as I write this. However, I am certain her happiest moments in years were at your place with our little family this past Christmas Eve. Thanks for being there. “Whimsy Abounds! From every corner to every wall through every door - there is a virtual feast for the eyes. Curiosity flourishes your mind as you gaze among a vast array of artwork, statues, china, lions, tigers, bears - OH MY! Beginning with the creak of the floor boards as you wander through the front foyer you get a sense of nostalgia. Never have I walked into a place and felt more at home. Typically buildings and establishments that are B&B-esque put you on guard and tend to make you walk on eggshells. Not the Mansion. A sense of calm, tranquil-ness is the initial feeling - then the explorer, the adventurer, the fortune-hunter is exposed and there is no stopping you! You must move, but cautiously so as not to miss one spec of who-knows-what. My first stay in the Windmill room was amazing. The emerald green soaker tub was sublime. The bed was heavenly. I swear it was like sleeping on angel's wings! The room is very quiet and provided a nice respite following my busy day. Of course the fact that I had experienced the plethora of cuisines at O-Dinnertini and imbibed on the Monday Martini's helped ;-) I certainly cannot wait for my next stay at the Mansion. August has a special O'Shimmertini event that is just the excuse I need to book a room and be pampered like royalty! From the most courteous of staff and volunteers to the welcomingly unpretentious owners - the Mansion is the premier location for food, fun, frolic and flight of the imagination not too mention the fabulous accommodations.”

“The Mansion was young when I lived in DC and I didn't know then of its existence. I wish I had. I wish I could have volunteered to work in the museum. I wish I could have been a part of this amazing experience in a way that enhanced the experience for others. But it was years later that my husband's good friend, a good friend of H's, invited us to visit the Mansion while we were vacationing in DC with our children. That visit was more magical than Disneyland for them (and for me, too!). I felt like Alice stepping through the Looking Glass. I was in the land of enchantment. H spoke to my son & told him of the opportunities that the Mansion provided for college students. It made me want to go back in time to my student days so I could intern in this unique atmosphere. My days are freer now that my once-homeschooled kids are in school. I'm trying to decide how to reinvent myself now that I'm not their teacher. And sometimes I think about how cool it would be to be back in DC & at the Mansion. Maybe in a few years when they are all in college I will go back to the place that so captured my imagination. Until then I visit the website and the photographs we took of our children that day. And my spirits are always raised.”

The true purpose of the afternoon was to help my neice forget just a few hours of her day. She had a premature delivery 30 days prior, baby girl weigh 2 pounds and remained in intensive care. This evening was to take her mind temporarily off the situation. Due to the Mansion wonderful environment/presentation, for several hours, my neice wondered through the mansion (as Alice - young at heart/carefree) magical rooms and doors, forgetting herself as she searched for treasures. I hadn't seen her eyes so wide, bright or smile so broad in several weeks. That afternoon was priceless and a looking glass moment I'll reflection upon forever! Thank you Mansion.”

I was in a beautiful and laid-back environment. It was so extravagant I felt like I was in a fairytale, but the assurance to roam freely, experience as much as possible, and become apart of a family full of, essentially, strangers, made the fairytale seem so much more tangible and real. The elegance and surrealism made The Mansion a place to want to be, but the humble grace of, for lack of a better term, "the staff" made The Mansion warm and welcoming, like a home, at least the kind of home I have been looking for.”

“I write a real estate blog, and wrote this piece about The Mansion: http://dc.thearlingtondirt.com/2010/07/12/oh-my-o-street-mansion/ We had taken my husband's parents there when they came to visit us recently. My mother and father in law have been essentially my parents for the past six years. They have loved me and supported me unconditionally. When my super-religious family wouldn't get behind our wedding because of differing religious views, my father-in-law stepped up and walked me down the aisle. My father-in-law, Mike, loves life more than almost anyone I have ever known. Jump out of airplanes? He's done it. Swim with sharks? Yep again. He served in Turkey during Vietnam, came home on Christmas leave, married his childhood sweetheart, my mother-in-law, Sandy, and swept her back to Turkey for an adventure. He is always doing or making something for others, like one his famous wood turning projects. Last time he came up, he brought my husband a cigar humido! r he made himself. This most recent trip when we came to The Mansion was picture perfect. We took him to see the Blue Angels show, brought him to The Mansion, and enjoyed each other's company to the fullest. That following week, we received news that he had a massive tumor in his lung that had spread to his brain, and he has now gone through radiation, is a about to start chemo, and has been given a few months to live. The Mansion will always be a special place for me and my husband because it holds the memories of our last good time together uninhibited by stress and dread. It is a special moment trapped in time, and we will cherish it always. It is a magical place, in so many ways, and every time we visit, we will remember that happy time. (click to enlarge)”

“I'm not really a poet, songwriter, or someone who would make a decent video, but I have found the Mansion to be an oasis in a town that all too often doesn't take time to look at the people around us except from the standpoint of their standing (i.e. powerful politician or administration official, rich businessman, etc. -- i.e. what can they do for me). I'm from Thorntown, Indiana, and came here many years ago to work for my Congressman, John Myers. I've always found the Mansion a treat and adventure, but as I learned more about the reason the Mansion came to be and a small bit about those who have a membership, the more I'm impressed and intrigued -- for example the dinners the Mansion occasionally quietly holds with people from all walks of life -- from powerful people to street people, none of whom know the names/satus of the others -- made it even more a place of which I'd like to be a part. Washington has much to offer, but it's a place that all too often ignores the diversity of this place which houses people once powerful people (but no longer), but still valuable and viable people, veterans who have their own stories to tell. I could go on and on, but I came to DC to learn more about government, but once I was here (and grew a bit older and, I hope wiser), I realized the wealth that is truly here in DC and mostly hidden. The Mansion discretely houses celebrities and those of us who are just regular people. Its diversity is something which, again the longer I'm here, I've come to value not only at the Mansion (we've not been active participants in the events, but have been there frequently -- bringing friends and relatives both from here and Indiana). It's a place which lets your mind go free -- sounds corny, but hope you will understand. My husband and I are at a point in our lives where we're facing the loss of our house and many other problems (insignificant compared to some), but this has also brought me to a point where I realize how much I've let "work" absorb me and not living my life to the fullest. Meeting new and diverse people, and hopefully having something to contribute as well, is something my husband and I would truly value and do our best to be members of your group who can contribute to the diversity and intrinsic value of what I've come to learn is the true meaning of the Mansion -- it's not just a neat place to have brunch. When you go below the surface, it's much, much more. As an aside, my husband and I are on our second marriage -- I've been here for many years, but he did a mid-life career change from building contractor to RN, working at the VA Hospital in DC. I met him while he was going to nursing school and working part-time at the nursing home where my mother resided for about about 4 years. We took a chance and married and he really took a leap of faith and came here to be with me. Contrary to questions from some of my friends as to how rich and old WAS he, as an RN he will never be rich, and he's my age -- since I've been here since '72, that will give you some clue. In short, we've often talked about a Membership to the Mansion, but had other financial priorities. This would be absolutely great for us and I assure you we'd do our best to add diversity to the "mix." House problems aside, we hope to remain here for some time, and are making adjustments as I work to establish a non-profit doing international development work. By the way, I should also mention (unrelated to our application) that we took my stepdaughter to the Mansion for brunch. She is a manager at Starbucks in Indiana. Just by chance one of her customers mentioned coming to DC. My stepdaughter asked if she'd heard of the Mansion -- the person had actually been there as a part of her meeting and was absolutely overwhelmed that Jama had been there with us. Sadly, it's taken me getting older to fully appreciate the fact that life is too short to just work -- we're both trying very hard to make that a priority. This would be a perfect opportunity -- I guess the longer you live the more you learn, and we hope to keep learning and learning. In fact, my husband has just gone back to school to obtain the equivalent in the nursing world of his MBA at 50+. So you can see, we're determined to regroup, while having fun and do interesting things at the same time. Thank you for your consideration -- and will keep fingers crossed.”

“I love the Mansion because it reminds me of stepping into a story book. Walking in the front door is like stepping into Alice in Wonderland. While peering around corners and in strange rooms it has you wondering just how far down does the rabbit hole go? Very few things in this life give you a chance to relive being a kid like the Mansion does. Because of this, its one of my favorite places in DC, and every time I get a chance to take someone there I do. In a city as cynical as DC, its nice to add a bit of whimsy into the mix :)”

“I first arrived at the Mansion in 1994, my first New Year's Eve since i'd moved to Dupont Circle from Chicago. Entering the mansion, at age 24 and just a few years out of college situated in a small town, I felt like i entered a magical world! The cocktails, the music, the crowds, the play casino tables, the spectactular scene before me made me realize I was in a very special place at a very special time. And that was just the entry-level floor! Making my way up the stairs and through secret doors and twists and turns, one room was more interesting and unique than the next. My favorite has stuck with me for years -- the "log cabin" with the loft-like kitchen and beautiful bathroom. Since 1994, I have dreamt of one day making a success of myself to come back and stay in this special room. I have certainly built my career and had kids since then, and get bogged down with bills for the mortgage, college funds and child care, but, at age forty, I still dream about waking u! p in the log cabin room just one time and enjoying brunch, away from the everyday Eggo waffle-toasting and hub-bub or real daily life!”

Every single person at the Mansion was kind and helpful and friendly...and effortless. Not studied. Not rehearsed. Just genuinely kind and wonderful. I had the best time sitting ensconced by the window on the sofa in the room with all the chandeliers, listening to the music and reading my New Yorker, and then later taking a stroll to DuPont Circle to people-watch. So, could i just come and live there for a while? ;-) Thank you, again!”

A group of us conversed about how good these desserts were (especially the lemon meringue) and encouraged everyone who came near to try them. I never thought that I would have a lemon meringue pie as good as my grandmother used to make but thankfully I was wrong. Mansion on O's lemon meringue pie was soooooo good that I've been thinking about it for weeks and hope to enjoy another piece in the near future.”

The organization was having a dinner on Wednesday night to honor and say farewell to both a long time Board member and a long time staffer. It was to be held at The Mansion on O Street formerly, The O Street Mansion and before that H.H. Leonards?. the very place we got married! When he told them that, they told him to bring me. Without telling me where it was, except for "some hotel" on O Street, he told me that I was invited and asked if I wanted to go. I said, sure, why not?.I met him at his office at 5:45, we took a taxi over?I didn't exactly hear the address he gave the driver, but when the taxi turned the corner onto the street and asked what address we were looking for again, Jim said, 2020?and the dawn struck!! "Hey," I said, "isn't that where we got MARRIED!" "Why YES," he said, laughing his little trickster laugh. It was very nice and exciting. We hadn't been back at all since the wedding in 1983 and it was only one house then. Now it is five interconnecting houses and very interesting to explore. They had a fabulous bar and both of the young women make excellent and very large cosmos?I know because I had two! Then, after we were all seated but before we ate dinner, H. H. herself talked a little about the place and asked if there were any questions. I told her we had gotten married there almost 25 years ago! And she gave us a coupon for a complimentary champagne Sunday brunch for two?.I think we'll use it on May 27, which is the Sunday before our anniverary on the 29th. And maybe we'll have a party back there for our 25th anniversary next year. It's certainly a beautiful and fun place and the food is fabulous! April 12, 2007”

We now have three children and live in Chapel Hill, NC -- we will plan to come spend our 20th anniversary there in just over a year. And we may still book your Monday lunch this trip, so we can show our kids the magical gem of a place where Mom and Dad exchanged their vows. We continue to be so delighted to have discovered you for our wedding nearly two decades ago, and we look forward to revisiting the spot where so much of our continuing happiness and amazing good fortune was launched.”

Paul & Mariana Williams on Nov 26, 2009 said:
“My fianc? Paul was scheduled to perform for an intimate gathering February 14th, celebrating the O Mansion's Silver Anniversary as well as the Benefit for The Clare Foundation. Paul Williams was a favorite of H. H. Leonards Spero, the hotel's founder and being one of the most romantic composers on record (that would be vinyl and compact disc), his music proved to be an excellent choice for the romantics in the city. My fianc? and I embarked on an adventure that began with pressing a red button on a concrete wall of a non-descript doorway. Feeling like Dorothy from Kansas, we found ourselves inside a magical world once the heavy door clanked shut. The interior of The Mansion has high ceilings and crystal chandeliers dangling sepia-toned light, casting the antiques, fine art and guests all in the same warm amber glow. After just minutes inside this mansion, you wonder if you can ever leave. The shimmering aesthetics draw you in, or is it they call you home? The comfort surrounds you like a velvet cloak and it's almost intoxicating. I've heard travelers describe the danger of stepping off a trail in a dense jungle; just two feet from the path one could get lost forever. That's the rich allure one feels standing just a few feet inside the door of this private luxury hotel of 22 rooms in the District of Columbia. The Nation's Capital, a-buzz with the concrete world of politics, for now has been placed on hold, as the real world is suspended. With few clocks or calendars, idealism reigns as music flows from room to room. The sensual atmosphere of beauty is set in motion by the founder of The Mansion, H. H. Leonards and her husband Ted Spero, whose eclectic taste is artfully displayed and heartfully expressed. Were wings promising a quiet protection shielding us from the noise of the city streets? Perhaps, since The Mansion is overflowing with angels pictured in ornate frames, replicated in marble and porcelain, or simply flying by on a painted wall. With just our minister Dr. Jim Turrell and his wife Patty flown in from California, we had a private ceremony in the Penthouse. As luck would have it (the word luck has been replaced by magical intervention), a beautiful picture of the Madonna hung on the wall behind us. The Greek artist, Alexandra Roussis, was the featured artist of the month, and her collection graced many of the walls in February; and described as "paintings that celebrate life and heal the soul." As we took our vows, candles flickered beside white roses as the song The Very Thought of You played in the background. It was an ideal romantic setting for the happiest day of our lives. Just as I started to get weepy, the beat turned around with the trumpet harmonies ofBeginnings by Chicago. The two songs book-ended emotions we were over-come with, at our tiny-gigantic wedding. Paul Williams' songs We've Only Just Begun, and Evergreen have set the backdrop for many couples on their wedding day. For us, at mid-life, we feel the same sentiments and rush of young love that those lyrics expressed. However, we needed to separate ourselves from those songs and that time. This year on Valentine's Day, for Paul and me, love was absolutely soft as an easy chair, and we are so thrilled that "we've only just begun!"”

The Mansion staff could not have been more accommodating and were great to work with throughout the planning process.
