So buying for her is difficult to say the least, but I know she loves to drink tea. Great, high tea, lots of places have high tea in the Washington area. Problem- she does not like typically high tea food. What to do? Well, after hours of searching the internet I come accros the O Mansion. You have tea and not just high tea, but desert tea as well, JACKPOT! I have hit the mother load, a present not only of good food and drinks but also of my time. What more could a mother want. We went on Sunday January 9, 2011 and we had the best time. Exploring the Mansion and sampleing way to many rich deserts, but worth a life time of memories it created for both of us. “I lived through this accident 4 years ago. The car was flipped end over end twice and rolled twice down a hill. I was belted into the passenger seat, the driver was unbuckled. He was thrown from the car before it flipped and landed unharmed beside the highway, I was in the only area of the car that was undamaged, in fact it looked as if an energy halo had kept that part solid. The tow-guy said it was a top ten wreck for him, and the worst injury I sustained was a broken big toe. I was 38 and had one son who was due to graduate High School. 2 months after this crash, I fell pregnant! The man who was driving was my husband and our marriage didn't survive to the end of the pregnancy, but for whatever higher purpose God has in mind for me, He has a greater one in store for my son. I can't afford to do much "extra" these days, but am passionate and curious and excited by life. I'd love to be able to share your work with my family. there are many days when I think that I actually DID die in that accident, and that all of THIS life that I am percieving is actually a dream. In that vein, I take nothing for granted, and revel in the gift that is "being". I have alot of arty things, (went to art school as a matter of fact) but Im going to send you a few things, 1 is an essay I wrote after last years snowstorm, the other is a photo of the accident, and third is a picture of me and that baby. The Mansion served as a refreshing retreat as we were greeted by friendly faces and served a delicious brunch. After brunch we explored and ventured through secret doors and imaginative spaces. We picked our favorite rooms and learned of the Mansion's secrets. During our exploration of the Mansion my boyfriend came across a George Washington doll. As a George Washington University graduate, he not only has a special place in his heart for DC, but also for George Washington himself. He went back and forth about purchasing it, but ultimately we both left with different items. When we returned home I emailed the museum and had the doll shipped to Rhode Island. As hard as it was, I kept Mr. Washington a secret. On Christmas we exchanged gifts, and he was both surprised and delighted to see our first President in the gift box. It could not have been a better way to commemorate our first Christmas. The Mansion on O Street truly holds a special place in my heart. The magic and wonder of the Mansion itself are what made it the centerpiece of our trip to Washington. But the helpfulness, attentiveness, and caring of the staff are what helped to make it a centerpiece of our relationship. We wanted to share our heartfelt thanks for letting us spend Christmas at the Mansion. While jet lag and mildly sick children prevented us from spending more time at the main house, the Gatehouse was an ideal place for everyone to decompress after the stresses of a transatlantic move, and a great staging area for our Christmas events, which included a nice Christmas Eve dinner with relatives in the District, and the great lunch at the Mansion yesterday, which allowed us to reacquaint ourselves with even more relatives in the area. I would have to say that staying at the Mansion is one of their favorite childhood memories. Since then, we have moved to Northern Virginia and we continue to visit the Mansion for Thanksgiving and Christmas meals. Even though my children are now 16 and 24, I believe they enjoy it as much as they did when they were younger. This Christmas, my older son is bringing his girlfriend. This is her first visit to the Mansion. In our family visiting the Mansion at the holidays is now a family tradition. A tradition I hope my children will share with their own children one day.”

Our little girls were sharing an outing with their parents and showing them secret passages and fun. For a shining afternoon I was just the mother of those little girls again. It was magical. The most special gifts are inspired. They come from the heart. As I struggle to think of a special gift for my sister, I remember the special afternoon my daughters gave me and I'm getting an idea.”

For many, many, moons, I have been a part of the universe of technology but I was recently a guest at a business event held at The Mansion. I was like a kid in the candy store with wide eyes and bright smiles. The world of science had intersected briefly with a world of art and style.... I cannot say for sure which of the many pieces of artwork, rock memorabilia or secret doors got my adrenaline flying the highest. I can say it was a truly memorable event. Imagine a charcoal grey, business-suited, 340 lb guy, hiking up and down the stairs and finding at least 10 of the secret doors in an hour-and-a-half. He breathlessly tells his VP about what he just found and marches off to his next adventure. The first act of this story ends when he manages to lock himself out on the balcony in December on one of the upper floors but the story will continue someday in a follow-up with friends and family. That is what I tell those same friends and family about the evening at The Mansion.”

The O mansion reminds me that there are so many ways of looking at everything and as a result there will always be more in life to explore, discover and dream. This magical trajectory the O mansion's philosophy very much inspires has lead me here. Since the first time I visited the mansion, I've had a strong desire to share this unique place with my whole family. Before learning about this contest I made a short documentary of a friend taking their first journey through the mansion. I doubled back off N and Connecticut a little, to be sure that 'my befuddled old guy' persona was still intact, and finally made it to the "RED DOOR". Now for those of you who know, or who will know, the RED DOOR is code for reaching the safe house. It is a haven for those of us who may watch Rubicon on 3D LED TV but under no circumstance, will listen to GaGa on an iPod. It takes more than technology to make it to the "O" Mansion. It takes an insatiable thirst for knowledge, and a few "Mabelline" riffs on a sitar. If you believe that real vampires live in Dark Shadows, and werewolves sing at Trader Vics with perfect hair, then you may be ready for the Mansion on O Street, in DC. “Have you ever felt as if there is no beauty left in the world. When circumstances and life itself make the reality of innocence lost all to real. This is a personal story of low self esteem, a dying soul and a broken spirit...and a cup of tea. All my dreams of youth had been shattered and I could never imagine the story that life had written for me. I felt alone and those around me didn't know the girl that became the woman who life itself had beaten with very little effort. I decided that I wanted to find someone who knew me "when" and could remember when we laughed for no reason, and when the most we ever worried about was getting our term papers in on time or a zit. So, I searched the internet for an old college friend that through distance, pride, life we had lost contact. Thank God for modern technology I did a people search and after 25 years I believed I found the person I was looking for, and was anxious to see if it was the same person. First, let me tell you about Monique "Mighty Mo" Dula, she is not a tall woman but she stands as a giant amongst most. She is the kind of friend that will walk thru fire for a friend but will also set your rear end on fire if she thinks you are wrong but does it with love and respect. She takes no nonsense or prisoners and I love her! She is my best friend, my partner in chocolate, and my sister. She has a smile that lights the world and wisdom beyond her years. When I dialed her number and heard that voice it brought back all kinds of memories and how happy was I, a friend who knew me when life was good. I left a message and waited - she called me almost immediately and we squealed as young silly girls. We tried to fit 25 years into 5 minutes between tears and laughter. She lives in Maryland and works in DC she was adamant for me to visit, but because of pride of not having a lot of money and embarrassment I kept putting the visit off, until she refused to take no for an answer. So, she decided to give me a Queens Weekend. I arrived at Union Station and there she was my beautiful long lost friend, almost like putting on that favorite outfit and you know everything is going to be alright. We hugged and jumped up and down how awesome. She planned the weekend saying she had a surprise and was saving the best for last. We did some pretty great stuff but then the incredible happened, I was transported to such opulence, distinction, things that seemed out of a fairy tale and all that was at The Mansion on O!! All during the weekend it was a rebuilding of spirit, soul, and fabulosity. But, that visit to the Mansion made me feel like Alice falling through the rabbit hole. I lost myself in the wonder of what the mind can conceive, the mysteries of the doors represented life to me - we never know whats behind them but if we don't open them we may be missing out on the best surprises. I felt like a queen as I walked through every area I could, and the food was something out of a feast set for royalty..Henry the 8th would have been jealous. Then as I walked around and was told every single thing was for sale that was almost surreal you can buy a piece of the fantasy. The experience was spirit and mind altering as I started to feel the wonderment of life, the creation and imagination that can take an idea to such levels. The Mansion was what I wanted to become queen like, mysterious, stately, opulent and yet inviting and approachable. I spent a few hours there replenishing my soul and making up stories of past guests and events. We went into one of the rooms and just sat in silence as if the house spoke of all its past visitors and how it too was a living, breathing thing and had a spirit and soul that has lasted through time. My friend bought me a little compact mirror, and told me every time I felt low, to look into it and see the queen that the Mansion brought out of me. Its been a few years since that first visit I have been back several times and life with God's grace has gotten so much better and I am so grateful for all I have. I have had brunch, tea and even Thanksgiving dinner at the Mansion. I always feel that I get a little fairy dust sprinkled on me when I'm there, and so have my guests because our hearts get light, laughter comes easy and the feeling stays past after you are gone. I have seen the most stoic individuals become children wondering where the doors are, and looking at the dessert buffet as if out of an Oliver Twist novel. So when I think of the Mansion I can think of all standard descriptions of its beauty and greatness but I think of the Mansion as the place where my heart started to heal, where my oldest and dearest friend shared old stories with me and reminded me of my worth, and where for the first time in a long time I dared to dream over a cup of tea!! It's really a good process of studying and improving. Although I met many kinds of difficulties in the work, I never give up and believe that these challenges will teach me something special. I try my best to adjust my states of mind to adapt to the jobs better. And it's really thankful that I really got some helps and encourages from my managers and fellows. In conclusion, the internship experience is impressive for me. It improves my personal ability of communication, observation and operation. It's meaningful. My mother was in stroke recovery, but in her day she was a musician, a flea market specialist and Collector of Things, and even a Docent at Hillwood, the Margery Merriweather Post mansion here in DC. She absolutely LOVED the O Mansion. The girls covered every room they could find and had a blast! Mom moved slowly between floors, but was in awe by Simply Every Thing! In between helping her around, my brother found The Perfect Hat. I had the best feeling of giving I have ever experienced and we all decided this would be a new family tradition. I was also on the lookout for one of the Afternoon Teas at the mansion hoping to get ! Mom to attend one of them. She was looking forward to one. Mom was hit this June with acute diabetic pancreatitis. The impact of this disease spread throughout her body, and although she fought for three and a half weeks in the ICU and suffered the entire time, we lost Mom on July 5th. Still in shock, and still going through her things, I just realized I have tears in my eyes as I write this. However, I am certain her happiest moments in years were at your place with our little family this past Christmas Eve. Thanks for being there. Of course the fact that I had experienced the plethora of cuisines at O-Dinnertini and imbibed on the Monday Martini's helped ;-) I certainly cannot wait for my next stay at the Mansion. August has a special O'Shimmertini event that is just the excuse I need to book a room and be pampered like royalty! From the most courteous of staff and volunteers to the welcomingly unpretentious owners - the Mansion is the premier location for food, fun, frolic and flight of the imagination not too mention the fabulous accommodations.”

I was in a beautiful and laid-back environment. It was so extravagant I felt like I was in a fairytale, but the assurance to roam freely, experience as much as possible, and become apart of a family full of, essentially, strangers, made the fairytale seem so much more tangible and real. The elegance and surrealism made The Mansion a place to want to be, but the humble grace of, for lack of a better term, "the staff" made The Mansion warm and welcoming, like a home, at least the kind of home I have been looking for.”

That following week, we received news that he had a massive tumor in his lung that had spread to his brain, and he has now gone through radiation, is a about to start chemo, and has been given a few months to live. The Mansion will always be a special place for me and my husband because it holds the memories of our last good time together uninhibited by stress and dread. My husband and I are at a point in our lives where we're facing the loss of our house and many other problems (insignificant compared to some), but this has also brought me to a point where I realize how much I've let "work" absorb me and not living my life to the fullest. Meeting new and diverse people, and hopefully having something to contribute as well, is something my husband and I would truly value and do our best to be members of your group who can contribute to the diversity and intrinsic value of what I've come to learn is the true meaning of the Mansion -- it's not just a neat place to have brunch. When you go below the surface, it's much, much more. As an aside, my husband and I are on our second marriage -- I've been here for many years, but he did a mid-life career change from building contractor to RN, working at the VA Hospital in DC. I met him while he was going to nursing school and working part-time at the nursing home where my mother resided for about about 4 years. We took a chance and married and he really took a leap of faith and came here to be with me. Contrary to questions from some of my friends as to how rich and old WAS he, as an RN he will never be rich, and he's my age -- since I've been here since '72, that will give you some clue. In short, we've often talked about a Membership to the Mansion, but had other financial priorities. This would be absolutely great for us and I assure you we'd do our best to add diversity to the "mix." House problems aside, we hope to remain here for some time, and are making adjustments as I work to establish a non-profit doing international development work. By the way, I should also mention (unrelated to our application) that we took my stepdaughter to the Mansion for brunch. She is a manager at Starbucks in Indiana. Just by chance one of her customers mentioned coming to DC. My stepdaughter asked if she'd heard of the Mansion -- the person had actually been there as a part of her meeting and was absolutely overwhelmed that Jama had been there with us. Sadly, it's taken me getting older to fully appreciate the fact that life is too short to just work -- we're both trying very hard to make that a priority. This would be a perfect opportunity -- I guess the longer you live the more you learn, and we hope to keep learning and learning. In fact, my husband has just gone back to school to obtain the equivalent in the nursing world of his MBA at 50+. So you can see, we're determined to regroup, while having fun and do interesting things at the same time. Thank you for your consideration -- and will keep fingers crossed.”

“Jim was asked to serve on the Board of Directors for the Community Health Accreditation Program and he attended his first Board meeting on Tuesday. The organization was having a dinner on Wednesday night to honor and say farewell to both a long time Board member and a long time staffer. It was to be held at The Mansion on O Street formerly, The O Street Mansion and before that H.H. Leonards.... the very place we got married! When he told them that, they told him to bring me. Without telling me where it was, except for "some hotel" on O Street, he told me that I was invited and asked if I wanted to go. I said, sure, why not....I met him at his office at 5:45, we took a taxi over...I didn't exactly hear the address he gave the driver, but when the taxi turned the corner onto the street and asked what address we were looking for again, Jim said, 2020...and the dawn struck!! "Hey," I said, "isn't that where we got MARRIED!" "Why YES," he said, laughing his little trickster laugh. It was very nice and exciting. We hadn't been back at all since the wedding in 1983 and it was only one house then. Now it is five interconnecting houses and very interesting to explore. They had a fabulous bar and both of the young women make excellent and very large cosmos...I know because I had two! Then, after we were all seated but before we ate dinner, H. H. herself talked a little about the place and asked if there were any questions. I told her we had gotten married there almost 25 years ago! And she gave us a coupon for a complimentary champagne Sunday brunch for two....I think we'll use it on May 27, which is the Sunday before our anniverary on the 29th. And maybe we'll have a party back there for our 25th anniversary next year. It's certainly a beautiful and fun place and the food is fabulous!”
